Jan 15, 2020: Los Angeles affordable and homeless housing project will demonstrate a “smarter, faster, cheaper” solution to home building. It uses an innovative and sustainable prefabricated modular system. It can be readily adapted to accommodate housing needs.
Devonshire Homes is delighted to announce that it has been selected by the Los Angeles County Development Authority as the winning submission in 2 proposal categories for “A Demonstration Project Fast-Track Housing Supply”.
The winning team was led by Devonshire Homes, Inc. as Prime Proposer and includes JFAK Architects and Plant Prefab. The team developed two concept designs and development programs. They will be built on two designated sites in LA County as a prefabricated housing community and a tiny homes community. The projects will incorporate on-site community facilities, including child care, employment and micro-business incubators. Construction will be coordinated with local workforce groups to provide employment opportunities for the community.
The Demonstration Project aims to “test and contextualize newer housing technologies and methodologies to add to the County’s existing affordable housing ecosystem. The ultimate goal is to better understand these types of housing and provide a way to scale housing production using these methods”. The LACDA will be coordinating with the Los Angeles County Departments of Regional Planning and Public Works and the Fire Department.
Alice Kimm, co-founder of JFAK Architects said: “These projects offer up an intelligent manner by which the prototype developments can be efficiently designed, constructed and tested on available sites. Once fully functional they can be multiplied quickly all across the County to create a new and dense fabric of livable, sustainable, affordable homes.”
“The vision is to create these small villages of prefabricated and tiny homes cheaper and faster”
Adam Fenner, President of Devonshire Homes, Inc. said: “The vision is to create these small villages of prefabricated and tiny homes. Furthermore, our project enables them to be built cheaper and faster than other methods. We apply the unique modular methodology of renowned technologist Plant Prefab. JFAK Architects bring their state-of-the art architectural solutions. The result is that the projects will accommodate a wide array of user types. This includes those having recently experienced homelessness or in need of transitional housing, very-low and low-income individuals and families and all those in need of affordable housing. The flexibility of the system means that the developments can be easily adapted depending on need and household sizes. In addition, they can be customized to preserve a sense of individuality.”
